Samoa Language Week - THIS WEEK
Wear your lavalava or sarong tomorrow, Friday 6 June
This week marks the start of Pasifika Language Weeks, and we will be celebrating Samoan language, culture, and identity at our school.
We’ll finish the week tomorrow with a Lavalava Day and ask students to bring a lavalava or sarong (it doesn’t have to be Samoan) to wear over their uniforms.
In the afternoon, we have some fun activities planned, supported by our Samoan community, parents, and caregivers. If you’d like to join us, come along and enjoy the festivities!

Board Update
As we celebrate Samoan Language Week, I wanted to take a moment to share some important updates from the Board.
The Ministry of Education continues to place a strong focus on regular school attendance, in line with the Government’s national goal for 80% of students to attend school more than 90% of the time.
Here’s how our school is tracking for Term 1, 2025:
The Ministry has outlined what qualifies as being "Present," a "Justified Absence," and an "Unjustified Absence."
This means students should be at school unless there's a valid, justified reason—like illness or bereavement. Holidays taken during term time are now considered unjustified, even if parents inform the school in advance.
We know life gets busy, and we’re all doing our best—but we also know that regular attendance makes a huge difference to your child’s learning, friendships, and overall confidence. Thank you for continuing to support your tamariki to be at school every day possible.
In other news, I’m pleased to share that the school will be purchasing a school gazebo to provide shade and shelter at sporting events, assemblies, and other outdoor occasions. We’re currently gathering quotes and hope to make the purchase very soon—just one more way we’re working to support our students and staff.
We’re also thrilled to be looking at ways to use the $10,000 AA Insurance Big Little Sponsorship grant, thanks to an incredible nomination by Juka and his whānau. Our Lady of Kāpiti was one of only four schools nationwide to receive this support! We are now looking at how we can stretch the funding further and make the most of this amazing opportunity for our school grounds.
And lastly, a big fa’afetai tele lava to our wonderful staff and community for embracing Samoan Language Week. As a proud Samoan, it’s incredibly heartwarming to see our culture and language celebrated across the kura. Thank you to Sose and the entire staff for the aroha and effort you’ve poured into this kaupapa. I know how special this week will be for our Pasifika students and their whānau.
When I see our school come together like this, I’m reminded of the Samoan proverb:
"O le tele o sulu e maua ai figota" – Many hands make light work.
That’s what makes Our Lady of Kāpiti special. Whether it’s helping with an event, supporting your child’s learning, or simply showing up with a smile—we see you and we appreciate you.
Ia manuia tele le vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa.

Winter Illness Remider
Some useful information from Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora
As we head into the colder months, cold, flu, COVID-19, and other respiratory viruses like RSV are becoming more common in schools and early learning centres. These illnesses spread easily through coughs and sneezes, so it's important we all do our part to keep each other well.
Common symptoms to look out for include:
Runny nose
Coughing or sneezing
Fever
Wheezing or difficulty breathing
Loss of appetite
Difficulty feeding (especially in babies and young children)
Some infections can lead to more serious illness such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis, particularly in babies and young tamariki.
Please remember:
If your child is unwell, they should stay home until they are completely symptom-free and feeling well.
Children should not return to school or early learning until at least 24 hours after symptoms like cough or runny nose have cleared.
Encourage regular handwashing with soap and drying hands thoroughly to help stop the spread of germs.
Shortness of breath or unusually fast breathing is a sign to seek immediate medical attention.
We also have free COVID tests available at the school office if you would like some to take home.
Thank you for helping us keep our school community healthy this winter!
Car Park Safety Reminder
We kindly ask all parents and caregivers to take extra care when using the school car park, particularly during busy drop-off and pick-up times.
We’ve had a few recent instances where vehicles have reversed over the pedestrian crossing. This creates a serious safety risk for our tamariki and their whānau. Please do not reverse in the drop-off zone. It should only take a moment of waiting for a car in front of you to move. Please also, always give way to pedestrians using the crossing.
A gentle reminder that the drop-off zone is strictly for quick stops only and is only to be used in the morning. This area is designed to keep traffic flowing and to ensure the safety of everyone using the car park. If you need to walk your child in, chat with other caregivers, or take some extra time getting your child ready, please use a designated parking space rather than the drop-off zone. The ONLY exception to this are the licenced after/before school care providers.
Your cooperation makes a real difference in keeping our school community safe. Thank you for your support.
